Allah the Exalted said:
"Today I have perfected for you your religion, and completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." (Al-Maaidah: 3)
Al-Hasan ibn As-Sabah narrated, heard from Ja'far ibn 'Awn, narrated from Abu Al-'Umays, informed us by Qays ibn Muslim, from Tariq ibn Shihab, from Umar ibn Al-Khattab, that a man from the Jews said to him, "O Commander of the Believers, there is an Ayah (verse) in your Book which you read; had it been revealed to us, the Jews, we would have taken that day as a festival." Umar asked, "Which Ayah?" He replied, "This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." Umar said, "We know that day and the place where it was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while he was standing in Arafat on a Friday." (Sahih Al-Bukhari no. 45, 4145, 4330, 6840)
Imam Malik ibn Anas (93 – 179 AH), may Allah have mercy on him, said, "Whoever introduces an innovation (bid'ah) in Islam and considers it good (hasanah), he has indeed accused Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) of betraying his mission. Because indeed Allah the Exalted has said: 'Today I have perfected for you your religion...' [Al-Maaidah: 3]." (Imam Malik further said), "Therefore, what was not part of the religion then, is not part of the religion today." [Al-I'tisam (I/64-65)]
"Today I have perfected for you your religion, and completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." (Al-Maaidah: 3)
