When you are asked, "What is Islam?"

Say that Islam is Al-Istislam (submission) only to Allah with Tawhid (worshiping Him alone), obedience to Him, and disassociating from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and its followers.

Allah, the Exalted, says: “Say (O Muhammad): ‘O People of the Book! Come to a word that is equitable between us and you – that we will not worship except Allah and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allah.’ But if they turn away, then say: ‘Bear witness that we are Muslims (submitting to Allah).’” (Ali Imran: 64).

And Allah the Exalted said: “And (remember) when Abraham said to his father and his people: ‘Indeed, I am disassociated from that which you worship, except for He who created me; and indeed, He will guide me.’ And he made it a word lasting among his descendants that they might return [to it].” (Az-Zukhruf: 26-28).

Allah the Exalted also said: “And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.” (Al-Bayyinah: 5).

Hadith from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) one day, a man came with extremely white clothes and very black hair. There were no signs of travel on him, and none of us knew him. He sat in front of the Prophet and rested his knees against his knees and placed his hands on his thighs and said: "O Muhammad, tell me about Islam." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Islam is to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to give zakah, to fast Ramadan, and to make pilgrimage to the House if you are able to do so." He said: "You have spoken the truth." We were amazed that he asked him and then confirmed the answer. He then said: "Tell me about Iman (faith)." The Prophet said: "It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day, and to believe in the Divine Decree, both the good and the bad of it." He said: "You have spoken the truth." He then said: "Tell me about Ihsan (excellence)." The Prophet said: "It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, for even if you do not see Him, He certainly sees you." He said: "Tell me about the Hour (the Day of Judgment)." The Prophet said: "The one who is asked does not know more than the one who is asking." He said: "Then tell me about its signs." The Prophet said: "When the slave woman gives birth to her mistress and when you see the barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings." Then the man left, and I stayed for a while. The Prophet then said: "O Umar, do you know who the questioner was?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "He was Jibril who came to teach you your religion." (Sahih Muslim No. 8)

Conclusion: The true meaning of Islam is to submit only to Allah with Tawhid (worshiping Him alone), to bind oneself to Him with obedience, and to disassociate from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and its followers.

Di que el Islam es Al-Istislam (sumisión) solo a Allah con Tawhid (adorarle solo a Él), obediencia a Él, y desasociarse del shirk (asociar compañeros con Allah) y sus seguidores.

Allah, el Exaltado, dice: “Di (¡Oh, Muhammad!): ‘¡Oh, Gente del Libro! Venid a una palabra justa entre nosotros y vosotros, que no adoremos sino a Allah y no le asociemos nada, y que ninguno de nosotros tome a otros como señores en lugar de Allah.’ Pero si se apartan, entonces decid: ‘Testificad que nosotros somos musulmanes (sometiéndonos a Allah).’” (Ali Imran: 64).

Y Allah el Exaltado dijo: “Y (recuerda) cuando Abraham dijo a su padre y a su pueblo: ‘Ciertamente, me desasocio de lo que adoráis, excepto de Aquel que me creó; y ciertamente, Él me guiará.’ Y lo hizo una palabra duradera entre sus descendientes para que pudieran regresar [a ella].” (Az-Zukhruf: 26-28).

Allah el Exaltado también dijo: “Y no se les ordenó sino adorar a Allah, siendo sinceros con Él en la religión, inclinándose hacia la verdad, y establecer la oración y dar el zakat. Y esa es la religión correcta.” (Al-Bayyinah: 5).

Hadiz de Umar (que Allah esté complacido con él) quien dijo: Mientras estábamos sentados con el Mensajero de Allah (la paz y las bendiciones de Allah sean con él) un día, un hombre vino con ropa extremadamente blanca y cabello muy negro. No había signos de viaje en él, y ninguno de nosotros lo conocía. Se sentó frente al Profeta y descansó sus rodillas contra las rodillas del Profeta y puso sus manos sobre sus muslos y dijo: "Oh, Muhammad, cuéntame sobre el Islam." El Mensajero de Allah (la paz y las bendiciones de Allah sean con él) dijo: "El Islam es testificar que no hay dios sino Allah y que Muhammad es el Mensajero de Allah, establecer la oración, dar el zakat, ayunar en Ramadán, y hacer la peregrinación a la Casa si puedes hacerlo." Él dijo: "Has hablado la verdad." Nos asombramos de que él preguntara y luego confirmara la respuesta. Luego dijo: "Cuéntame sobre el Iman (fe)." El Profeta dijo: "Es creer en Allah, Sus ángeles, Sus libros, Sus mensajeros, y el Último Día, y creer en el Decreto Divino, tanto el bien como el mal de él." Él dijo: "Has hablado la verdad." Luego dijo: "Cuéntame sobre el Ihsan (excelencia)." El Profeta dijo: "Es adorar a Allah como si lo vieras, porque aunque no lo veas, Él ciertamente te ve." Él dijo: "Cuéntame sobre la Hora (el Día del Juicio)." El Profeta dijo: "El que es preguntado no sabe más que el que pregunta." Él dijo: "Entonces cuéntame sobre sus señales." El Profeta dijo: "Cuando la esclava dé a luz a su ama y cuando veas a los pastores descalzos, desnudos y pobres compitiendo en la construcción de altos edificios." Luego el hombre se fue, y me quedé un rato. El Profeta luego dijo: "Oh, Umar, ¿sabes quién era el que preguntaba?" Yo dije: "Allah y Su Mensajero saben mejor." Él dijo: "Era Jibril quien vino a enseñaros vuestra religión." (Sahih Muslim No. 8)

Conclusión: El verdadero significado del Islam es someterse solo a Allah con Tawhid (adorarle solo a Él), atarse a Él con obediencia, y desasociarse del shirk (asociar compañeros con Allah) y sus seguidores.
