THE DAY THE RELIGION WAS PERFECTED
Ibnu Katsir (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
قَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَوْلَهُ: {الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ} وَهُوَ الْإِسْلَامُ، أَخْبَرَ اللَّهُ نَبِيَّهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنَّهُ أَكْمَلَ لَهُمُ الْإِيمَانَ، فَلَا يَحْتَاجُونَ إِلَى زِيَادَةٍ أَبَدًا، وَقَدْ أَتَمَّهُ اللَّهُ فَلَا يَنْقُصُهُ أَبَدًا، وَقَدْ رَضِيَهُ اللَّهُ فَلَا يَسْخَطُه أَبَدًا.
وَقَالَ أَسْبَاطٌ عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ: نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ يَوْمَ عَرَفَة، فَلَمْ يُنَزَّلْ بَعْدَهَا حَلَالٌ وَلَا حَرَامٌ، وَرَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَمَاتَ.

Ali bin Abi Talhah narrated from Ibnu Abbas regarding Allah's statement: {This day I have perfected for you your religion} (Al-Ma'idah: 3), referring to the religion of Islam. Allah informed His Prophet (peace be upon him) and the believers that He had perfected faith for them, so they would never need any additions forever. And Allah had completed it so that it would never diminish forever, and Allah had approved it so that He would never be displeased with it.
And Asbat narrated from As-Suddi: This verse was revealed on the day of Arafah, and no further lawful or unlawful rulings were revealed afterward. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) returned and passed away.
