THE CONSEQUENCES OF BID‘AH (INNOVATIONS IN RELIGION)

بسم الله الرحمٰن الرحيم

🩸THE CONSEQUENCES OF BID‘AH (INNOVATIONS IN RELIGION)🩸

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymīn (d. 1421 H), may Allah have mercy on him, said:

> **“Everyone who worships Allah with a belief, a statement, or an action that is not from the legislation of Allah is an innovator (mubtadi‘).
Thus, the Jahmiyyah worship through their belief, and they believe that they are declaring Allah free of imperfections. The Mu‘tazilah are the same. And the Ash‘ariyyah worship according to the false belief that they adhere to.

And those who introduce specific remembrances (adhkār), they worship Allah by means of them and believe that they will be rewarded for that.

And those who introduce specific actions, they worship Allah by means of those actions and believe that they will be rewarded for that.”**

All of these three categories—those who introduce innovations in beliefs, in statements, or in actions—every innovation from among their innovations is misguidance. The Messenger ﷺ described it as misguidance, because it is a compound matter and because it is a deviation from the truth.

Bid‘ah necessarily entails corrupt and harmful consequences:

1. First: It entails declaring false the statement of Allah, the Most High: “Today I have perfected for you your religion” (al-Mā’idah: 3).
Because if someone introduces a new innovation which he considers to be part of the religion, then the implication is that the religion has not been perfected.

2. Second: It entails disparagement of the Sharī‘ah, implying that it is deficient, and that this innovator has completed it.

3. Third: It entails disparagement of the Muslims who did not practice this innovation. Thus, everyone who lived before the appearance of these innovations is considered to have had a deficient religion! And this is dangerous!!

4. Fourth: Among the necessary consequences of bid‘ah is that, in most cases, whoever becomes occupied with an innovation becomes distracted from the Sunnah. As some of the Salaf said:
“No people introduce an innovation except that they demolish a Sunnah equivalent to it.”

5. Fifth: These innovations cause the Ummah to split apart. This is because the innovators believe that they are upon the truth, and that those besides them are upon misguidance! While the people of truth say: “Rather, you are the ones upon misguidance!” Thus their hearts become divided.

So all of these are tremendous corruptions, all of which arise from bid‘ah merely by virtue of it being bid‘ah, even though it is also accompanied by foolishness in reason and corruption in religion.
