He said: ‘Stay until some charity comes to us, then we will order it to be given to you.’ Then he ﷺ said: ‘O Qabīṣah, indeed begging is not lawful except for one of three:
(1) A man who has incurred a liability (ḥamālah, such as debt for reconciliation), then it is permissible for him to ask until he obtains it, then he must stop.
(2) A man who is struck by a calamity that destroys his wealth, then it is permissible for him to ask until he acquires what will sustain his livelihood – or he said: ‘what will cover his needs.’
(3) A man who is afflicted by extreme poverty, until three intelligent men from among his people stand and testify: ‘Indeed so-and-so has been struck by poverty.’ Then it is permissible for him to ask until he obtains what will sustain his livelihood – or he said: ‘what will cover his needs.’
> “As for anything beyond these three, O Qabīṣah, then begging is unlawful (suḥt), and the one who takes it consumes something unlawful.”*
