⚡️THE DUTY OF THE SAINTS (AWLIYĀ') OF ALLĀH⚡️
Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728 AH), may Allāh have mercy on him, said:
> “The saints (awliyā’) of Allāh are obligated to adhere firmly to the Book and the Sunnah. None among them is infallible such that it would be permissible for him—or for others—to follow what arises in his heart without consideration of the Book and the Sunnah. This is something upon which the saints of Allāh, Exalted is He, are unanimously agreed. Whoever contradicts this is not among the saints of Allāh, glorified be He—those whom Allāh has commanded us to follow—but rather, he is either a disbeliever, or someone excessively ignorant and heedless.
> This is something frequently mentioned in the words of the spiritual masters. For instance, Shaykh Abū Sulaymān ad-Dārānī said:
‘Indeed, sometimes a subtle point (nuktah) from the points of the spiritual people enters my heart, but I do not accept it unless it has two witnesses: the Book and the Sunnah.’
> Abū al-Qāsim al-Junayd, may Allāh have mercy on him, said:
‘This knowledge of ours is bound by the Book and the Sunnah. So whoever does not read the Qur’ān and does not write (i.e., study) ḥadīth, then he is not fit to speak about our knowledge,’ or he said: ‘He is not to be followed as an example.’
> Abū ʿUthmān an-Naysābūrī said:
‘Whoever makes the Sunnah authoritative over himself—both in word and deed—will speak wisdom. And whoever makes his whims authoritative over himself—both in word and deed—will speak innovation (bidʿah).’
For Allāh, Most High, said in His eternal speech:
“And if you obey him (the Messenger), you will be guided.” [An-Nūr: 54]
> Abū ʿUmar ibn Najīd said:
‘Every spiritual state (wajd) that is not witnessed by the Book and the Sunnah is false.’
> Many people err in this regard. They presume that a certain person is a saint of Allāh, and then presume that it is acceptable to receive from him whatever he says, and surrender to him whatever he does—even if it contradicts the Book and the Sunnah. Thus, they conform to that person and contradict what the Messenger brought—whom Allāh has obligated upon all creation to believe in everything he conveyed and to obey in everything he commanded.
> Allāh has made him (the Messenger) the criterion between His allies and His enemies, between the inhabitants of Paradise and the inhabitants of Hell, and between the fortunate and the miserable. So whoever follows him is among the pious allies of Allāh, His successful soldiers, and His righteous servants. And whoever does not follow him is among the enemies of Allāh—the losers and the criminals.
> Departing from the path of the Messenger and conforming to such a person (claimed to be a saint) will first lead to innovation and misguidance, and eventually to disbelief and hypocrisy. Such a person will end up receiving a share of what Allāh the Most High said:
> “And [warn of] the Day when the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] and say: ‘Oh, I wish I had taken the path with the Messenger! Woe to me! I wish I had not taken so-and-so as a close friend. He certainly led me astray from the reminder (the Qur’ān) after it had come to me.’ And ever is Satan, to man, a deserter.”
[Al-Furqān: 27–29]
> And His saying, Exalted is He:
> “The Day their faces will be turned about in the Fire, they will say: ‘Oh, would that we had obeyed Allāh and obeyed the Messenger.’ And they will say: ‘Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our leaders and our great ones, and they led us astray from the [right] way. Our Lord, give them double the punishment and curse them with a great curse.’”
[Al-Aḥzāb: 66–68]
