The Disease of ‘Ain and Its Treatment/ ‘Ain

**The Disease of ‘Ain and Its Treatment**

**Question from Ummu Haurah Pinrang in the WhatsApp group Nashihatulinnisa:**

_"Excuse me, does anyone know how to treat the disease of 'Ain in babies? Besides reciting prayers for protection from 'Ain, what else can be done if children have already been affected by 'Ain?"_

---

**Question to Sheikh Muhammad al-Salih al-Uthaymeen:**

**"Is taking precautions against ‘Ain contrary to tawakkul (trust in Allah)?"**

Taking precautions against ‘Ain is permissible and does not contradict tawakkul; in fact, it is a form of tawakkul because tawakkul is relying on Allah while also taking the permissible or recommended means. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would seek protection for al-Hasan and al-Husain by saying:

_"I seek protection for you both with the perfect words of Allah from every devil, poisonous creature, and every harmful eye."_ (Tirmidhi and Abu Dawood)

This is what Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) used to say for his sons Ishaq and Ismail (peace be upon them). (Fatawa Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen 2/117, 118)

**Sheikh Muhammad bin Shalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) on protecting oneself from ‘Ain:**

He said that protecting oneself from ‘Ain is permissible and does not negate reliance on Allah. In fact, it is part of tawakkul, as tawakkul involves relying on Allah along with taking permissible or commanded measures.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to seek protection for al-Hasan and al-Husain with the words:

_"I seek protection for you both with the perfect words of Allah from every devil and harmful creature, and from every harmful eye."_ (Tirmidhi and Abu Dawood)

He also said that if anything could precede destiny, it would be the ‘Ain. If you are asked to wash to treat someone affected by ‘Ain, then do so. (Muslim)

**Explanation by Ibnul Qayyim in Zaadul Ma’ad:**

The effect of ‘Ain does not depend solely on seeing the object; even a blind person can describe something and influence it with ‘Ain without seeing it. Many cases have shown that ‘Ain can occur through imagination without direct sight. (Zaadul Ma’ad 4/153)

The Prophet also warned about the dangers of ‘Ain, saying that most deaths in his community, after Allah's decree, are due to the influence of ‘Ain. (Bukhari)

**Regarding the treatment of ‘Ain:**

Once, Amir bin Rabi’ah saw Sahl bin Hunaif bathing and remarked on his beautiful skin. Shortly after, Sahl fell ill, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) was called. He asked who they suspected and was told it was Amir. The Prophet then instructed Amir to perform wudhu (ablution), and the water from his wudhu was poured over Sahl, which cured him. (Ibn Majah)

Similarly, when the Prophet saw a girl with a dark spot on her face, he instructed that she be treated with ruqyah because she was affected by ‘Ain. (Bukhari and Muslim)

In another instance, the Prophet advised Asma’ bintu Umais to perform ruqyah on the children of Ja’far bin Abu Talib, who were affected by ‘Ain. (Muslim)

**Conclusion:**

The disease of ‘Ain can be caused by an envious or admiring glance, and it may occur from someone who is envious, loves the object, or even from a pious or wicked person.

**Al-Hafizh Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said:**

‘Ain is a gaze mixed with envy that originates from an evil nature and can cause harm to the person being looked at. (Fathul Bari 10/200)

💭 *Al-Hafidz, may Allah have mercy on him, also said:*

‎"The ‘ain (evil eye) can occur along with admiration, even without envy, whether it comes from someone who loves or from a righteous person."

📚 *Fathul Bari 10/205*

‎💡 *This indicates the great harm that Allah has created in the ‘ain (evil eye), to the extent that it can kill. Therefore, it should not be taken lightly.*

💭 *An-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, said:*

‎"In this hadith, there is a confirmation of belief in Allah's decree and the truth of the matter of the ‘ain (evil eye), and that it is indeed very dangerous."

📚 *Fathul Bari 10/205*

💭 *Ibn Hajar, may Allah have mercy on him, said:*

‎"The affliction by the ‘ain (evil eye) can indeed kill, and there is a difference of opinion among the scholars regarding the application of qisas (retaliation) in this matter."

📚 *Fathul Bari 10/205*

🥀 *Ways to heal those afflicted by the ‘ain (evil eye):*

🍀 *By performing ruqyah (incantation). The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said:*

‎"There is no ruqyah (that is more beneficial) except for the evil eye or a disease caused by a poisonous creature."

📚 *Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim from Buraidah bin Al-Husayb, may Allah be pleased with him.*

🍀 *Parents should pray with supplications, dhikr (remembrance), and ta’awwudh (seeking refuge) that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, taught for their children, such as reciting the mu’awadhatain (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas).*

*Additionally, there is a supplication recited by Angel Jibril, peace be upon him, when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was afflicted by a devil:*

‎"In the name of Allah, I perform ruqyah for you from everything that harms you, from the evil of every soul and envious eye. May Allah cure you."

🍀 *Seeking refuge in Allah is the best protection from the ‘ain (evil eye) and from all harm. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sought refuge for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain, may Allah be pleased with them, from the ‘ain (evil eye), as narrated by Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:*

‎"The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to seek refuge for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain, and he would say, 'Indeed, your father (referring to Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him) used to seek refuge for Ismail and Ishaq with these words: 'I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every harmful creature, and every envious eye.'"

📚 *Narrated by Al-Bukhari*

🍀 *By asking the person who looked with admiration to bathe or perform ablution, and then using the leftover water on the one afflicted by the ‘ain, as narrated in the hadith of Sahl bin Hunaif:*

‎"If it is known that someone has afflicted another with the ‘ain or there is suspicion of it, the person who gave the evil eye is instructed to wash for the benefit of his brother. A container of water is brought, and the person washes his hands in it, rinses his mouth, and spits the water into the container. He then washes his face in the container, puts his left hand in it, and pours water over his right knee. Then, he puts his right hand in and pours water over his left knee. He then washes his garment, and the water is poured over the head of the afflicted person from behind, and by Allah’s permission, he will be cured."

📚 *Fatawa Lajnah Daimah 1/186*

💡 *Or in another way, by using a single vessel, the person washes their face, hands, elbows, knees, the tips of their feet, and inside their garment. Then, the water used for washing is poured over the afflicted person.*

📚 *Narrated by Malik in Al-Muwatta 2/938, Ibn Majah, and authenticated by Ibn Hibban*

💭 *Ibnul Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said:*

‎"This method will not benefit those who deny it, mock it, doubt it, or perform it just to try it without belief."

📚 *Fathul Bari 10/205*

*(One must believe that this is a treatment established by the Shariah and not merely a trial, as modern medicine cannot understand or prove it.)*

📝 *And for someone who might unintentionally afflict others with the ‘ain (which could be any of us), it is recommended to follow the practice mentioned below:*

‎*Q: If someone sees something that amazes them, should they say ما شاء الله تبارك الله (Masha Allah Tabarak Allah) or ما شاء الله تبارك الله لا قوة إلا بالله (Masha Allah Tabarak Allah La Quwwata Illa Billah)? Are all of these phrases correct?*

💭 *Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy on him, replied:*

*If someone sees something amazing in their wealth, they should say:*

*As in the story of the two garden owners, when his companion said to him:*

‎"If only when you entered your garden, you had said ما شاء الله لا قوة إلا بالله (Masha Allah, La Quwwata Illa Billah)."*

*This is when you are amazed by your wealth.*

*If you see it in someone else's possession, then you should say:*

*(May Allah bless it for him) or a similar phrase.*

*If you see something worldly that amazes you, then you should say:*

*Labbaik (I respond to Your call), for true life is the life of the Hereafter."*

*This is as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say Labbaik and then follow it with: "Indeed, the true life is the life of the Hereafter."*

*This is to remind oneself that no matter how great the world appears, it is transient, and the true life is in the Hereafter.*

📚 *Fatawa Nur Ala Al-Darb, Tape No. 321*

💭 *The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:*

‎"If any of you sees something in his brother, in himself, or in his wealth that amazes him, he should pray for blessings upon it, for the ‘ain (evil eye) is real."

📚 *Narrated by Ahmad, Al-Hakim, and authenticated by Al-Albani in Al-Silsilah As-Saheehah*

*Wallahu A’lam (Allah knows best)*

‘Ain

_(提尔密济和艾布·达伍德)

_(提尔密济和艾布·达伍德)

(《Zaadul Ma’ad》 4/153)
