🌨 THE VERSES OF SAKĪNAH ARE A REMEDY FOR THE ANGUISH OF THE SOUL 🌨
Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 751H) – may Allah have mercy upon him – said:
> Allah the Exalted says:
{When those who disbelieved placed in their hearts arrogance – the arrogance of the time of ignorance – then Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers} [al-Fatḥ:26].
And Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah – may Allah have mercy on him – whenever affairs became extremely difficult for him, he used to recite the verses of as-sakīnah (tranquility).
I heard him saying – concerning a tremendous incident that occurred to him during his illness, something the intellects are incapable of bearing – a battle with demonic spirits which appeared to him at a time when his physical strength was extremely weak. He said:
> “When the matter became extremely hard upon me, I said to my relatives and those around me: ‘Recite the verses of as-sakīnah!’ Then that condition departed from me, and I sat down calmly without any agitation whatsoever.”
And I (Ibn al-Qayyim) have also tried reciting these verses when the heart is distressed due to what descends upon it (of anxieties). I saw an extraordinary effect upon the heart in terms of calmness and tranquility.
The reality of as-sakīnah is calmness, dignity and inner peace which Allah places in the heart of His servant when it is shaken due to severe fears. After that, the person no longer panics at what comes upon him. It brings about an increase in faith, strength of certainty and steadfastness.
For this reason, Allah – Glorified and Exalted – informs us about His bestowing of sakīnah upon His Messenger ﷺ and upon the believers during moments of anxiety and agitation:
Like on the day of the Hijrah, when he ﷺ and his companion were in the cave and the enemy was just above their heads – and were one of them to look under his feet, he would surely have seen them.
And like on the day of Hunayn, when they turned and fled because of the overwhelming might of the disbelievers, and none of them looked back at the other.
And also on the day of Hudaybiyah, when their hearts were shaken due to the upper hand that the disbelievers had over them and due to their having to enter into an agreement whose conditions were extremely difficult for their souls to bear. It is enough to consider that even ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) – and he is ʿUmar – could hardly tolerate it, until Allah made him firm through Abu Bakr as-Ṣiddīq (may Allah be pleased with them both).
