🚫 7 REASONS WHY DEMONSTRATIONS ARE FORBIDDEN IN ISLAM 🚫
A demonstration or protest is an activity of gathering in the streets to voice aspirations, objections, or demands. This phenomenon occurs in many countries, including the lands of the Muslims. However, the scholars of Ahlus Sunnah explain that demonstrations are not the Islamic way of giving advice to rulers nor of striving for rights. On the contrary, Islam prohibits its followers from engaging in demonstrations because of the many harms that result from them.
Here are 7 reasons why demonstrations are forbidden in Islam, along with their evidences:
---
1. Demonstrations Are Not the Guidance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and His Companions
Islam has already provided a complete guideline in facing the problems of the ummah and the rulers. It has never been recorded in history that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his Companions, or the Salaf held demonstrations to voice aspirations. In fact, such practices are from the habits of the Khawārij (rebels).
🔹 Allah says:
> “And whatever the Messenger has given you – take; and what he has forbidden you – refrain from.”
(QS. Al-Ḥashr: 7)
---
2. Imitating the Disbelievers (Tashabbuh)
Demonstrations are a Western culture adopted from the modern democratic system, not originating from Islamic teachings. Islam prohibits Muslims from imitating disbelievers in matters that are their distinguishing traits.
🔹 The Prophet ﷺ said:
> “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”
(HR. Abū Dāwūd, no. 4031)
---
3. Containing Evil and Disorder
In practice, demonstrations are often filled with shouting, insults, destruction of public facilities, and even clashes. Yet Islam prohibits causing corruption on earth.
🔹 Allah says:
> “And do not cause corruption on the earth after it has been set in order.”
(QS. Al-A‘rāf: 56)
---
4. Contrary to the Islamic Way of Advising Rulers
Islam teaches that advising rulers should be done privately (in secret, not in public).
🔹 The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
> “Whoever wishes to advise a ruler, let him not do so publicly. Rather, let him take his hand and be alone with him. If he accepts, then that is good; and if not, he has fulfilled his duty.”
(Ibn Abī ‘Āṣim, as-Sunnah, with Zhilaal al-Jannah by al-Albānī, 2/523)
---
5. Fueling Hostility and Fitnah
Demonstrations usually lead to hostility between the people and the government, and even among the people themselves. This opens the door to fitnah and division.
🔹 The Prophet ﷺ said:
> “Do not revert to disbelief after me, striking the necks of one another.”
(HR. Bukhārī, no. 121; Muslim, no. 65)
---
6. Opposing the Principle of Patience with the Injustice of Rulers
Islam commands patience when facing the injustice of rulers, as long as they are still Muslims and do not commit clear disbelief. Demonstrations, however, encourage rebellion.
🔹 ‘Ubādah bin Ṣāmit (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
> “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called us and we pledged allegiance to him. Among the things he took from us was that we would listen and obey in times of ease and hardship, in what we liked and disliked, and even if others were given preference over us. And that we would not dispute with those in authority over their rule, unless we saw clear disbelief concerning which we had proof from Allah.”
(HR. Bukhārī, no. 7056; Muslim, no. 1709)
---
7. Removing Safety and the Stability of the Land
Demonstrations often result in the loss of security, destruction of property, and even bloodshed. Yet safeguarding security is a great blessing that must be preserved.
🔹 Allah says:
> “And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah, then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.”
(QS. At-Tawbah 9:6)
---
It is thus clear that demonstrations are not an Islamic tradition, but rather an imported culture from non-Islamic systems. Islam has provided a safer and wiser way of giving advice and striving for rights, namely by advising directly, being patient, and supplicating to Allah.
Therefore, Muslims should avoid demonstrations because they bring more harm than benefit and they contradict the guidance of the Sharī‘ah.
